Calvac Paving in San Jose crack sealing work

One of the processes that paving contractors can perform in these conditions of rain and clear skies is crackfilling. It takes just a day of good weather to allow us to come in and prepare the cracks with the installation of the crackfiller the following day if necessary. Here is some information concerning this service.

CONDITION:

Linear cracking in your asphalt surface. Aged and oxidized asphalt that has intermittent cracking. These cracks are typically widespread throughout the property and not concentrated in one area or interlocking.
If there are alligatored areas (interconnecting cracks) then these areas should be repaired rather than crackfilled. These problems are exacerbated by the intrusion of water which will penetrate to the subgrade and accelerate cracking and base failure caused by shrink/swell of the subgrade.

Latest Paving Job Calvac Paving

CAUSE:

Causes of this linear cracking could be a less than satisfactory base course on top of a moisture sensitive subgrade causing swell and shrinkage in that subgrade. This movement reflects through the base course and the up through asphalt surface. The infiltration of moisture through this cracked and oxidized (dried out) asphalt accelerates the damage.
Additional causes would be ground slippage, expansion and contraction due to heat and cold cycles, shrink/swell of the subgrade, the advanced age and oxidization of the asphalt surface.

CORRECTION:

Cracks that are 1/4” -3/8” can be filled with a cold pour asphalt emulsion crackfiller. Cracks that are 3/8” – 3/4” will require the use of a hot rubberized crackfiller. Cracks larger than 3/4” should be corrected with hotmix asphalt, by filling the cracks with hotmix asphalt and covering with hot pour crackfiller and better yet is to follow up with a Petromat overlay of the area.
With either application the cracks will have the existing vegetation removed and then the crack will be blown out with high pressure air and high heat. If necessary we can apply a spray sterilant to the existing vegetation prior to removal.
If we apply cold pour crackfiller, then that material is poured into the crack to bridge the opening and create a flexible filler that is then struck with a specialized squeegee to force the material deeper into the crack and to localize the coverage of the material into a thin strip at each side of the crack.
If the cracks require hot rubberized crackfiller, then that material is heated to 350°+ and the material is forced into the crack and struck flush with the surface.

If your property is in need of a asphalt/concrete repair, Calvac Paving is standing by to assist!

The Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, sets very strict standards for commercial construction to ensure that people with physical disabilities have full access to public buildings and places of all kinds. Because the provisions of the ADAS, ADA standards, are constantly evolving, many construction and architectural firms, and local and state inspectors are unaware of how the different aspects of ADA codes impact the specific construction of various structures, including the need for ramps, compliant parking stalls and upgraded access and barrier removal in the case of building remodels and renovation.

ADA certification in the form of ADA Expertise particularly important in the state of California, because of the constant turnover of property management and ownership. Often the first sign that anything is amiss with a particular building or business’s ADA compliance comes in the form of a property inspection, visitor complaint or drawing revision, with expensive consequences in exposure to litigation, retrofitting to comply with California Building Code and the ADA standards and other related costs of remediation. While ADA Expert certification is not yet commonplace, it is believed to become far more important among construction-industry professionals in the coming years.

Calvac Paving has been serving the Bay Area for over 40 years, and has been closely monitoring changes and amendments to the ADA standards since they were first put in place in 1991. Several years ago, Calvac Paving’s President, Jim Adam, decided to take this aggressive monitoring several steps further and pursue full CASp, or Certified Access Specialist, certification. This rigorous training and certification program requires applicants to be fully trained and cognizant of issues concerning building and business access for disabled persons at both the state and federal levels to ensure compliance with all ADA provisions.

Jim explained that his purpose in seeking this certification was to better serve Calvac Paving’s clients and the general public. “By training for years to understand the history, goals and application of the Americans with Disabilities Act, I am better equipped to ensure Calvac Paving’s clients a final product that will provide the barrier removal and access that the current CBC [California Building Code] and ADAS require on their properties.”

The ADA Expertcertification benefits all the stakeholders in the building process, as well as the general public. “{CASp} certification gives a confidence level that the project will be correct and that you will be able to avoid potential litigation…while getting the final product you need to be CBC and ADAS compliant.” As more construction professionals become ADA Expertcertified, Jim says the multiple points of view will help to reduce conflicts between differing objectives and strategic building outcomes while ensuring all members of the design and execution team are familiar with the code requirements that ADA imposes. Jim says this is a win for everyone, but especially the end user, which is why he sought out ADA Expertcertification to begin with.

He says he’s known for years that ADA certification would be an important step in Calvac Paving’s future ability to serve clients and the public more effectively. “The process for me started more than ten years ago when I hired ADA compliance experts to educate myself, our estimators and lead field personnel long before there was a ADA Expertprogram. Then a couple of years ago I started the training process to become ADA Expertcertified. We’re trained and tested on all barrier removal and accessibility codes…it allows us to be true experts in barrier removal.” Jim also feels that Calvac Paving benefits directly from his ADA compliance expertise, because it allows him to ensure his crews can do their jobs more efficiently and “do it right the first time,” as he puts it.

Having access to the ADA Expertcertification gives Calvac Paving another powerful tool to serve its clients and help reduce potential compliance issues and costs for everyone involved, and Jim believes that as ADA Expertcertification grows in popularity, it will further establish Calvac Paving as an industry leader in ADA compliance and building accessibility for all. This, he feels, will also give stakeholders more confidence and alleviate concerns about whether or not their buildings and businesses meet applicable building codes for accessibility. As a company spokesperson noted, the event—which is hosted by the California Apartment Association—will be held at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The full-day conference typically draws a crowd of 1,500-plus professionals from a variety of industries.

The team from Calvac Paving will be in Booth 318 during the event. As the spokesperson noted, attendees are welcome to come by the booth and enter to win a raffle. “People who take pictures of Calvac Paving’s booth and use the hashtag #CAAConnectExpo will automatically be entered to win a prize from the asphalt and concrete company,” the spokesperson said, adding that representatives from the company are looking forward to meeting other attendees and exhibitors that are also in the Property Management and Maintenance industry. One reason the event is so popular with attendees, the spokesperson said, is that it’s a one-stop shop for information relating to the rental housing industry.

For example, this event features 160-plus exhibitor booths and educational seminars that feature nationally recognized speakers. Everyone who attends—from owners and corporate executives to property managers, leasing professionals, California Certified Residential Managers and more—will leave the event feeling like they have received the answers and information they need about their most urgent management challenges, as well as determining which vendors are the best for their businesses.

“Calvac Paving has served the Bay Area for over four decades, so we are confident that we can help answer a variety of questions that attendees may have about our industry while also enjoying meeting new clients,” the spokesperson said.

Due to the current shelter-in-place order from the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department, Calvac is rapidly building a backlog of pending projects.

When this ordinance lifts, we will hit the ground running and we anticipate a need to increase our field staff by 50% to 100%. Although we have not laid off any employees, we understand that many Bay Area workers have been laid off during this difficult time and we hope that Calvac can alleviate some of this burden for dozens of locals.

Please fill out the application online and we will evaluate and contact potential candidates while the order is in effect.  Then we will be ready to go back to work as soon as this ordinance is lifted.

Calvac Paving Maintains High Safety Work Record

Calvac Paving Maintains High Safety Work Record

The construction industry requires a delicate balance between worker safety and work completion and efficiency. At Calvac Paving, we value the safety and health of our employees as an integral part of our Business Plan. While many companies say this, we are pleased to be able to provide hard numbers to prove it. Our Ex-Mod(California Modification Rating System) rating of 74 with our workers’ compensation insurer is one of the lowest in the industry. This means that over the last three years, our experienced workers’ compensation losses have been 25% less than the conventional wisdom of the insurance industry said they should be. All this sounds very impressive, but what does it actually mean? Here’s a closer look at why this is big news for Calvac Paving and our valued clients.
Calvac Paving Crew Hard At work

What Does Ex-Mod Really Mean?

In simple terms a company’s  experience modification compares actual losses to expected losses. The experience rating system, in essence, adjusts the premium an employer will pay based on a comparison of that employer’s history of payroll and claims (collectively referred to as “experience”) to the average experience of other employers within the same classification. The result of this comparison is an experience modification. A Ex-Mod rating of a  100 is average, and pays 100% of the customary premium for coverage. Likewise, a company with an ex-mod of 125 would pay 125% of the industry average premium, because of the higher risk and nearly certain greater expense involved in the carrier keeping this company on the books.

Calvac Paving’s rating of 74 is well below the industry standard and means that we pay less than 3/4 of what many of our competitors would for identical workers’ compensation coverage. The best performers in the industry rarely reach an ex-mod of below 70, because insurance carriers can hardly afford to give away their coverage. However, our ex-mod does provide a verifiable, actionable metric by which to measure worker safety and the likelihood of on-the-job accidents and injuries among our employees.

How Is Ex-Mod Calculated?
The State of California’s Worker’s Compensation Insurance Rating Board put new rules in place for 2012, based on recommendations from the state insurance commissioner in 2008. These rules state that insurance ex-mod is calculated every year as an average of the data from the three preceding calendar years. The WCIRB guidelines require that insurance carriers provide an ex-mod score statement each year, usually at least 30 days before renewing the premium. These guidelines are intended to incentivize good occupational health and safety practices and limit workers’ compensation claims, but at Calvac Paving, we just call that business as usual. The financial perks that come with having a great safety record are always welcome in the business world, but what really matters to us is what our ex-mod means in the real world: the fact that our employees go home every night to their families in the same condition they left the house in the morning.

What Does Our Insurance Broker Say?

Our insurance broker, NFP/Thoits Insurance, consistently praises our safety record and the programs we use to improve it. Because we take our people’s safety so seriously, we incorporate training on every aspect of construction safety, site and roadway hazards and first aid training. We work closely with our carrier to implement and maintain a sound, viable loss prevention strategy, including IIPP and Early Return to Work programs that help our employees get back to work sooner while remaining in compliance with their healthcare provider’s orders. Because of these factors, our broker has consistently praised our programs and proactive worker safety initiatives, even going so far as to note that our programs are paving the way for future improvements.

From The Principals

Calvac Paving’s Principals are justifiably proud of the company, management and employees for the way they have worked together to make a safer workplace a reality. By continuing to train employees in proper on-site safety protocols and emergency measures as part of a program that meets Cal-OSHA standards for workplace safety, Calvac Paving is leading the way in setting the highest benchmarks possible for worker safety and lost-time injury prevention. Even more importantly, it means Calvac Paving’s employees get to enjoy more productive working days and quality, healthy time with their loved ones when off the clock. While construction continues to be a challenging field in which to balance productivity and safety, we take great pride in proving it’s possible every day.
